It is well said that, “If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water.” Arguably, the importance and uses of water are precious and worthwhile. It is not only used for drinking and domestic purposes but also beneficial for industrial uses, including agriculture, electronics and pharmaceutical sectors and in various manufacturing and production processes. Well, water tanks and underground tanks play an essential role as water reservoirs are required across a multitude of applications. Imagine if the water your intake or use is toxic; the repercussions can be catastrophic. Thus, to keep the cleanliness and hygiene of water on priority, it is important to have proper water tank cleaning at adequate times. This is not only required as law but is an essential healthy and safe practice. The cleaning process should be carried out at regular intervals to keep your water storage tank maintained and free from water-borne diseases like cholera, typhoid fever etc. Now, let’s understand what water tank cleaning is.
What is Water Tank Cleaning?
According to recent reports by the World Health Organization (WHO), eight hundred twenty-nine thousand people die each year from water-borne diseases, leading as the major cause of disease and death across the world. Therefore, water tank cleaning is quite important to reduce the proliferation of bacteria and ensure hygienic water for consumption.
Whether the water is supplied from the water system to residential or commercial areas such as shopping malls, corporate offices, health care centers etc., and even to industrial applications, thus, water testing is necessary. It is to maintain the standard quality of water stored and is fit for utilization. This is the main reason to monitor water storage tank cleaning in order to ensure that the tanks are effective, environmentally friendly and safe to use.
In general, the water tank cleaning process includes draining the tank, dislodging and removing the residue, disinfecting the tank and then drying and refilling the tank again. Here, we have listed down the cleaning of water tanks in detail to ensure the quality.
How to Easily Clean Your Water Tanks at Home?
The majority of people heed more attention towards water purifier systems rather than cleaning the source of water, that is, water storage tanks. They should be cleaned twice or thrice annually. However, it may sound difficult task to do so, but the most important thing is to ensure hygiene and safe health.
Here are the easiest steps to clean your water storage tanks: –
#Step 1: – Empty the Water Tank
The first and foremost thing is to drain out the water from the tank. All you need is to open the outlet valve or tap to drain out completely. Permanent storage tanks are usually fitted with a washout valve that allows you to draw liquid from the base of the tank. This is a great feature for when you need to clean out the tank or if you need to access the liquid for any other reason.
#Step 2: – Scrub the Internal Surfaces of the Tank
In order to clean your water storage tank, start removing all the sand and debris from its surface. Now, use the mixture of hot water and detergent (normal household laundry soap powder will work) to scrub and clean all the internal surfaces of the tank. This can be done with a stiff brush or a high-pressure jet. If you attach the brush to a long pole, you may be able to clean the tank without having to enter it. Make sure to take the extra time to clean corners and joints especially well so that no residual traces of the original liquid are left behind. Even if it’s just a small amount of some liquids, it can give the water an unpleasant taste and people will be less likely to drink it. This process usually takes half an hour.
After scrubbing, wash the entire tank with a high-pressure hose pipe or water jet. If none of these is available, then you can fill the tank with hot water and left to stand for a few hours. Then, drain all the water from the tank and continue flushing until there are no longer traces of detergent.
The pumps and pipes used for filling and emptying the water tanks should also be completely clean. Flush the mixture of hot water and detergent through pipes and pumps to remove deposits and other materials.
Once the entire tank is cleaned, flush the system with clean water to remove the traces of detergent.
#Step 3: – Disinfection of Water Tank
The most common and effective way to disinfect a water tank is by chlorination. Chlorine is delivered in various ways, but the most common method is high-strength calcium hypochlorite (HSCH), which liberates 60 to 80% of its volume as chlorine gas when mixed with water. The amount of chlorine needed to disinfect the water storage tank will depend on its volume.
Fill the tank a quarter of the way full with clean water. For every 1000 liters of the water tank, sprinkle in 80 grams of granular HSCH. To finish, fill the tank the rest of the way with clean water. Close the lid and leave it to sit for 24 hours. If you need to use the tank before 24 hours is up, double the amount of chlorine you added originally. This will reduce disinfecting time from 24 hours down to 8.
#Step 4: – Prepare the Water Tank for Use
In order to prepare the tank for use, you will need to completely empty it and carefully dispose of the disinfecting water. The water will contain a high concentration of chlorine, so it is important to get rid of it properly. Next, fill the tank with drinking water and allow it to stand for about 30 minutes. Once the time is up, empty the tank again. Your tank is now ready to be used! How to Clean a Home Water Tank
