Assembling PVC pipe joints

PVC pipe joints are made by joining the end of a PVC pipe to another one. You can use a PVC pipe cutter or a PVC glue gun.  

1. Start by cutting the two pipes to length, making sure that they are the same size and the ends line up properly.  
2. Next, you will need to add the glue to one end of one of the pipes, then place it on top of the pipe you want to join.  
3. When you’re ready to attach them, hold both pipes together and ensure that the smaller end faces upwards. 
4. Then push down firmly on both ends until they are bonded together.  
5. Once they are joined, you can use a PVC glue gun to seal them together.  
6. You can go about assembling pvc pipe joints in a few different ways. If you don’t have a glue gun, there are other ways to make them stick together without using any adhesive.

3 Do’s and Don’ts of Assembling PVC pipe joints

1A)Do not over-tighten the PVC pipe joints –

Turn them only a few turns and then stop. Over-tightening and over-stretching are one of the most common causes of leaks. Most plumbing joints are designed to be easy to tighten and should not take more than a quarter turn. When a pipe is over-tightened, it can lead to cracks in the pipe, leading to a leaking or other plumbing problems. Over-tightening also leads to uneven wear on the joint, damaging the pipes over time. Following the above rules can prevent an issue and ensure that your pipes will last for years! 

1B)Doing Finger tightening-

The joints of pipes is always a good practice, and it’s a good idea to do so. This can help prevent leaks from occurring. However, it would help if you only finger-tighten the joints with a large diameter and an internal diameter close to one another. If these conditions are not met, you cannot finger tighten the joint effectively. When finger tightening the joints, it’s important to ensure you do all of the required steps in a particular order, especially when working with multiple pipe sections. Starting with any section of pipe that has already been tightened and then continuing with additional sections is an effective way to ensure that no leaks occur while you work. Additionally, when finger tightening the pvc pipe connectors, try to get as much grip possible with your fingers before applying any force. This will help ensure that there are no unwanted gaps between your fingers and the pipe as you tighten it. 

2A)Do not use sealant tape, paste or pipe dope –

Sealant tape, paste or pipe dope are not as effective at reducing leaks as an actual sealant would be. The main problem is that they can only hold up to light pressure changes and vibrations, which is why they are generally not recommended for use in high-stress applications such as those found in HVAC systems. Another important reason not to use sealant tape, paste or pipe dope is that it may not adhere well to surfaces and may result in future problems with rusting or corrosion. When you apply sealant tape, paste or pipe dope to a joint, you are applying two types of compounds: an adhesive coating and a lubricating agent. The adhesive coating provides adhesion while the lubricating agent improves motion. However, suppose any type of moisture is present in the area where the material is being applied (such as condensation). In that case, the adhesive layer will break down and eventually fail. 

2B) Do use specially designed sealants-

Sealants are an effective way of protecting threaded joints from water, dirt, and pests. They can also protect painted surfaces, restore colour and lustre, and create a long-lasting barrier between the surface and outside elements. Seals designed for PVC threaded joints are made from a special polymer that fits snugly over the threads, creating a watertight seal. 

3A) Do not go for such 80 fittings-

It is important to understand the difference between the terms “stronger” and “sturdier” when discussing Sch 80 fittings. A Sch 80 fitting is technically a “stronger” connection than a Sch 40, as it has larger threads that can withstand higher torque loads. However, an over-tightened Sch 80 will split more easily than an over-tightened Sch 40 because of the increased stress concentration at the connection point. Therefore, if you want to avoid splitting in your connections, it is best to avoid using “stronger” fittings altogether and instead stick with smaller-diameter Sch 40 fittings that are less likely to break under pressure. 

3B) Do start using SCH 80 PVC nipples-

With both Sch 40 and 80 PVC fittings. They are threaded so that you can adjust the pipe diameter. And they are also available in a variety of sizes.
